Episode 7: Cage / Takemitsu Tribute

This week's program is a special tribute to John Cage and Toru Takemitsu.

Conceptually, radio silence is also an unspoken tribute to John Cage's "4 minutes 33 seconds", this year being the 70th anniversary of its premiere in 1952. This "Invention of Silence" was Cage's seminal work having a significant influence on the future directions of new music and contemporary art. The right channel audio source is an excerpt from Cage's 1985 performance of his mesostic poem "MUSHROOMS et Variationes." As a world-renowned researcher of mushrooms, Cage frequently implemented it as a medium for his compositions.

When John Cage first visited Japan in 1962, Toru Takemitsu organized a contemporary music festival in Sapporo for that occasion. Accompanied by long-time collaborator David Tudor, the troupe visited the Jigokudani site of Noboribetsu Hot Springs, among other areas around Sapporo. This historic visit also established a meaningful connection between Takemitsu and the city of Sapporo for years to come. In 1982, a legendary concert featuring the world premiere of three Takemitsu pieces was performed by the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra. The left channel audio features an episode about a special lecture organized for the composer on the occasion of the concert. 第７週は特別プログラムとして、ジョン・ケージと武満徹へのオマージュで構成しています。

radio silenceはジョン・ケージ作曲「4分33秒」の、1952年初演から70周年に際したオマージュでもあります。ケージのこの作品は「沈黙の発明」として、音楽のみならず、現代芸術に大きな影響を与えました。右チャンネルはキノコの世界的研究者でもあったケージが80年代に行ったレクチャーを元にしています。

ケージが最初に来日したのは1962年ですが、その機会に札幌で現代音楽祭を企画したのが、武満徹でした。同行したデビッド・チュードアとともに、ケージは登別温泉の地獄谷などを訪れたことが知られています。それ以降、武満と札幌との交流は深く、1982年には札幌交響楽団による世界初演コンサートも開かれました。左チャンネルでは、その際に行われた特別講演のなかの、あるエピソードを取り上げています。詳しくは、今週発売になった新刊『武満徹、世界の・札幌の』をご覧ください。
